Dr. Lopes currently teaches at the graduate School of Development Policy and Practice, in the University of Cape Town and is a visiting Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford. Dr. Lopes is a member of several Boards including Kofi Annan Foundation, JakayaKikwete Foundation and the Geneva Graduate Institute.
Dr. Lopes has led several UN institutions such as UNITAR, UN System Staff College and the Economic Commission for Africa, from which he stepped down voluntarily in November 2016.
He is a member of the African Union Reform team chaired by Rwandese President Paul Kagame and special advisor to the current AU Chair Guinean President Alpha Conde. Prof Lopes has published extensively and has a syndicated media contribution.
